Symphony No. 29 was completed in April 1774 in Salzburg, Mozart's hometown, when he was 18. The orchestra is small: just strings plus two oboes and two horns. Even so, its four movements are full of brightness, tenderness and graceful strength, and it is often called one of the finest symphonies of his youth.
Many symphonies of that time began with the whole orchestra playing loudly. But this one starts with the violins softly playing a short figure that drops an octave, almost like a whisper. The other instruments quietly join in, and the music slowly grows. Some say Mozart was influenced by the new music, such as Haydn's, that he heard on a trip to Vienna the year before.
The music is detailed like chamber music, and the instruments seem to chat with each other. In the last movement, the violins rush up in fast scales, and the horns ring out with energy. Today it is one of the most often performed of Mozart's early symphonies.
Mozart wrote this symphony when he was 18. Many symphonies at that time started loudly. But this one starts very quietly, like a whisper. The orchestra is small, but the music is full of life.

Many eighteenth-century symphonies began with loud chords, which also helped catch the attention of a noisy audience. But No. 29 begins softly, with the violins almost whispering. It makes listeners lean in to hear, a bold idea for an 18-year-old.
Apart from the strings, this symphony uses only two oboes and two horns. There are no flutes, trumpets or timpani. Yet by combining the sounds cleverly, Mozart creates many moods, from brightness to strength. It is like a great chef making a feast from just a few ingredients.
This piece is listed as both 'K. 201' and 'K. 186a.' K numbers come from the catalogue in which Ludwig von Köchel arranged Mozart's works in the order they were written, in the 19th century. Later research changed the order and added new numbers, so many works have two numbers.
In 1773, Mozart went to Vienna with his father to look for a job at court, but he did not get one. On that trip, though, he probably heard new symphonies and string quartets by Haydn and others. Some say this symphony, written after he returned to Salzburg, shows that inspiration.
