Mozart entered Piano Concerto No. 20 in his catalogue on 10 February 1785 and performed it himself the next day, 11 February, at a subscription concert in a Vienna hall called the Mehlgrube. Of his 27 piano concertos, only two are in a minor key: this one and No. 24.
Concertos of that time were usually bright, entertaining music. This one, however, begins with an uneasy murmur in the low strings and builds into a storm. On the day of the premiere, Mozart's father Leopold had just arrived in Vienna from Salzburg, and he attended the concert. He described it in detail in a letter to his daughter.
This dramatic music was loved by the next generation of musicians. In the 19th century, when many of Mozart's concertos were rarely played, this one stayed in the repertoire. Beethoven wrote cadenzas, the soloist's showpiece passages, for it, and they are still often played today.
Most concertos at that time were happy. But this one sounds dark and stormy. Mozart played the piano at the first concert. His father came to listen. Beethoven admired this music too.

The day after the premiere, some of Mozart's string quartets were played at his home. Haydn, who was there, told Leopold: 'Your son is the greatest composer known to me either in person or by name.' Leopold recorded these words in a letter to his daughter.
According to Leopold's letter, on the day of the concert the copyist was still copying the orchestra's parts. Mozart went on stage without ever having played through the last movement. Even so, Leopold wrote that the concert was magnificent.
Beethoven admired this concerto and is said to have played it in concerts himself. The cadenzas (solo showpieces) he wrote for its first and third movements are still used by many pianists. In one concerto, the music of two geniuses meets.
The closing credits of the film Amadeus (1984) are accompanied by the second movement, 'Romance', of this concerto. Its melody sings gently, but a sudden stormy section appears in the middle, showing the mysterious depth of Mozart's music.
