Der Vogelfänger bin ich ja' is the aria that Papageno, a man who catches birds for a living, sings when he first appears in Mozart's opera The Magic Flute. Dressed in feathers, he plays a little panpipe and introduces himself as a cheerful bird-catcher. Its melody is simple and friendly, like a folk song anyone can hum.
The Magic Flute is a Singspiel, a German-language stage work that mixes songs with spoken dialogue. It was written not for the court opera but for a popular theater in a suburb of Vienna. The libretto was written by the theater's director, Emanuel Schikaneder, who also played Papageno himself. It is a fun story full of comedy, magic and adventure.
The premiere took place on September 30, 1791, at the Theater auf der Wieden in Vienna, with Mozart himself conducting. The opera became a big hit and was performed many times. But about two months later, on December 5, Mozart died at the age of thirty-five. Papageno's song is still loved around the world as a perfect first step into opera for children and adults alike.
Papageno catches birds. He wears clothes made of feathers. He plays a small pipe and sings a happy song. The man who sang Papageno first also wrote the story. The song is easy to remember.

Schikaneder, who wrote the libretto, was a theater director, actor and singer. At the premiere he played Papageno himself. Some say the melody is simple and easy to sing because it was written to suit him, since he was not a full-time opera singer.
Papageno's pipe plays just five notes in a quick rising scale, like do-re-mi-fa-sol. This little whistle, sounding between the lines of his song, became Papageno's trademark.
In a letter to his wife in October 1791, Mozart wrote that during another Papageno song with magic bells, he played the glockenspiel himself in the wings. When Schikaneder paused, Mozart suddenly played a run of notes, and the next time he played nothing at all, just to surprise him. He wrote that the audience laughed a lot.
The name Papageno is said to come from 'Papagei', the German word for parrot. His sweetheart, who appears later, is named Papagena. Their duet, in which they stutter 'Pa-pa-pa', is one of the cutest scenes in all opera.
