Mozart entered this piano sonata in his catalogue of works on 26 June 1788, describing it as 'a little keyboard sonata for beginners'. True to those words, its clear writing makes it easy for many learners to approach, and it has become a staple of piano lessons around the world. It later became known as the 'Sonata facile', or 'easy sonata'.
But it is not just an exercise. In the summer of 1788 Mozart was also writing his great Symphonies Nos. 39 to 41. Born in that busy time, this sonata has three movements: a bright first movement, a singing second movement and a bouncy finale. The first movement is a compact example of sonata form, in which themes are presented, developed and then brought back, but it has a surprise: the main theme comes back in an unexpected key, F major.
The sonata was first published in 1805, after Mozart's death. For more than 200 years since then it has been loved by piano teachers and students, and it may be one of the Mozart pieces played by the most people. Outside classical music, it has also been enjoyed in jazz and other arrangements.
Mozart wrote this sonata for beginners. He wrote 'for beginners' in his own list of music. Many piano students play it. But it is not only easy. It is also very beautiful!

From 1784 Mozart kept a notebook listing his works with dates. For this piece he wrote 'a little keyboard sonata for beginners'. It is a well-known case of a composer writing down exactly who a piece was for.
In sonata form, the first theme usually comes back in the home key, which here is C major. But in this first movement, the theme first returns in a different key, F major. Even a 'beginners' piece hides a bold surprise like this.
The left-hand pattern in the first movement, 'C-G-E-G, C-G-E-G', is called an Alberti bass. It is named after the 18th-century Italian composer Domenico Alberti, who used it often. This sonata is one of its best-known examples.
In 1939 the American bandleader Raymond Scott used the melody of the first movement for a jazzy piece called 'In an 18th Century Drawing Room'. Mozart's sonata for beginners was reborn with a swinging rhythm.
