The Story

The Rondo in D major, K. 485, is a piano piece Mozart wrote in Vienna in January 1786, just before he turned thirty. It begins with a bright, bouncing tune, which comes back again and again in different keys. It is a fun, friendly piece that piano students often play at recitals.

A rondo is a form in which the same tune keeps returning, with other tunes in between. But although this piece is called a rondo, it is really closer to sonata form, a pattern in which a theme is presented, developed, and brought back, here built mainly on one theme. Its main tune is often said to be very similar to a melody by Johann Christian Bach, the youngest son of the great J. S. Bach.

Early 1786 was the time when Mozart was working on his opera The Marriage of Figaro. The autograph has a note in French dedicating it to a young lady named Charlotte, but we do not know for sure who she was. It is a small piece, but like a jewel box, it is packed with Mozart's ideas.

This is a happy piano piece. It has one main tune. The tune comes back many times. Each time, it sounds a little different. Many piano students play it.

In a normal rondo, different tunes appear between the returns of the main tune. But this piece is built almost entirely from one tune, and its overall shape is close to sonata form. The main tune appears in several different keys.

The main tune is said to be very similar to a melody by Johann Christian Bach, whom Mozart met and became friends with in London as a child. A similar tune also appears in the finale of Mozart's own Piano Quartet, K. 478.

The autograph has a French note meaning 'for Miss Charlotte', but her family name is only partly written. Even scholars are not sure which family she belonged to. Perhaps she was a young noblewoman who was learning the piano.

The date is January 10, 1786. At that time, Mozart was working on The Marriage of Figaro, which premiered in May that year. It shows his genius that he could write such a light piano piece while working on a huge opera.
