The Story

Piano Sonata No. 14 in C minor, K. 457, was written by Mozart in Vienna in 1784, when he was twenty-eight. He entered it in his own catalogue of works with the date October 14. It opens with a powerful rising figure, and loud and soft sounds suddenly change places. It is a very dramatic piece.

At this time, Mozart was a popular pianist in Vienna, busy with concerts and lessons. In 1785, this sonata was published together with the Fantasia in C minor, K. 475, and dedicated to his piano pupil Therese von Trattner. C minor later became famous as a key for strong emotions, used by Beethoven in his Fifth Symphony and the 'Pathétique' Sonata.

The power of this piece and the way its slow movement sings are often said to be similar to Beethoven's 'Pathétique' Sonata. Beethoven greatly admired Mozart, but we do not know whether he knew this work or used it as a model for the 'Pathétique'. Among Mozart's pieces, it is one that seems to look ahead to the future.

This piano sonata is strong and serious. Mozart wrote it in Vienna in 1784. It starts with a loud, rising sound. Some parts sound like Beethoven's later music. But we do not know if Beethoven knew this piece.

In 1785, this sonata was published in one volume with the Fantasia in C minor, K. 475. The fantasia was written after the sonata, but they share the same key and mood, so pianists today often play the fantasia first and then the sonata.

Therese von Trattner, to whom the piece was dedicated, was Mozart's piano pupil. Mozart and his wife also lived for a time in a building owned by the Trattner family. Perhaps the dedication was also a way of saying thank you.

The key of C minor, the fierce opening, and the mood of the slow movement's melody are often said to resemble Beethoven's 'Pathétique' Sonata. There is no proof that Beethoven used it as a model, but if you compare them, you may be surprised.

In the last movement, the music sometimes suddenly stops, and short melodies like sighs appear. Then waves of fierce sound rush back. It is a movement full of worry and sorrow, and its feelings are unusually open for Mozart.
