Mozart wrote this string quartet in Vienna in 1783, when he was 27. A string quartet is music for four players: two violins, a viola and a cello. No. 15 is in dark, intense D minor and has four movements. The joy of a string quartet is that all four instruments talk as equals.
Mozart was moved by the string quartets of the older composer Haydn, and he spent more than two years writing six quartets of his own. This is the second, and the only one of the six in a minor key. It is said that his wife Constanze later told people he was writing it on the day their first child was born.
The six quartets were published in 1785 and dedicated to Haydn. In the dedication, Mozart called them the fruit of long and hard work, and spoke of them as his children. The last movement is a set of variations on a gently swaying tune in the style of a siciliana. These six quartets are still played as treasures of the string quartet repertoire.
This music is for four string players. Mozart wrote six of these and dedicated them to Haydn. This is the only one of the six in a minor key. Mozart's wife later said that he was writing it when their first baby was born. Haydn praised these quartets highly.

It is said that Constanze later told visitors from England that Mozart was writing this piece near her on the day their first child was born. However, the details cannot be confirmed.
In his 1785 dedication, Mozart compared the six quartets to his children and called them the fruit of long and hard work. People often think Mozart wrote easily, but he worked very hard on these six.
In 1785, after hearing these quartets, Haydn told Mozart's father Leopold that before God, his son was the greatest composer he knew in person or by name. Leopold wrote this down in a letter to his daughter.
Of the six quartets called the Haydn set, only this No. 15 is in a minor key. The other five are all in major keys, so this quartet stands out in the set for its dark, tense sound.
