The Divertimento in D major, K. 136, is a piece for two violins, viola and bass. Mozart is thought to have written it in his hometown of Salzburg in 1772, when he was about sixteen. It has three movements, fast, slow and fast, and it sparkles from the very first note, like morning light bursting through a window.
At this time, Mozart had just come back from a long trip to Italy, and the bright, singing style he heard there shows clearly in this piece. A divertimento usually includes dance movements called minuets, but this one has none. Because of this, some scholars think Mozart may have meant it as a string quartet, or as a small symphony without wind instruments.
K. 136 belongs to a set of three, together with K. 137 and K. 138. In Japan the set is also known as the 'Salzburg Symphonies', but Mozart did not give it that name. Today it is played both by string quartets and by larger string orchestras, and it is widely performed by student orchestras and professional ensembles alike.
This is a happy piece for strings. Mozart wrote it as a teenager, at about sixteen. It has three parts: fast, slow and fast. The first part sounds like a sunny morning. Many young players love to play it.

In those days, a divertimento usually had two minuets, but K. 136 to 138 have none at all. Because the name and the music do not quite match, scholars still discuss what these pieces were really meant for.
The autograph score says 'Salzburg 1772'. However, research on the paper and handwriting has led to a theory that Mozart first wrote '1771' and later changed it to '1772'. Even one small number can hide a mystery.
The famous Mozart scholar Alfred Einstein thought these three pieces were written so that wind parts could be added to turn them into symphonies. Their three-movement form is similar to Italian-style symphonies of the time. But there is no clear proof.
This piece is played by a string quartet, with one player on each part, and also by a string orchestra with many players. With four players it sounds light, like a conversation. With many players it sounds bright and grand. It is fun to compare the two.
