The Concerto for Flute and Harp was written by the 22-year-old Mozart in Paris around April 1778. It was composed for the Duc de Guînes, who played the flute, and his daughter, who played the harp. It is a bright, elegant piece in which the two soloists and the orchestra seem to chat with one another.
Mozart had come to Paris with his mother, looking for work. He also taught the duke's daughter composition, and in a letter to his father he praised the duke's flute playing as 'incomparable' and the daughter's harp playing as 'magnificent'. The harp was rarely a solo instrument in concertos then, and this is Mozart's only concerto with a solo harp.
But the stay in Paris turned out to be hard. In letters to his father, Mozart complained about payment from the duke. Then in July that year, his mother, who had come with him, died in Paris. It is hard to believe that music so full of bright light came from such a time.
This music has two solo instruments: a flute and a harp. Mozart wrote it in Paris. A duke played the flute. His daughter played the harp. It is Mozart's only concerto with a harp.

A little before this, while working on flute pieces for another client, Mozart wrote to his father that he quickly lost interest when he had to write for 'an instrument I cannot bear'. But this may have been an excuse for being slow with the job, and people still argue about whether he really disliked the flute.
Mozart left more than 600 works, but this is his only concerto in which the harp plays a solo role. The harps of his day are said to have been less flexible than modern ones, so Mozart probably wrote with notes that suited the instrument in mind.
Mozart taught the duke's daughter composition, and in a letter to his father he described how hard the lessons were, saying she simply had no ideas. Even the genius Mozart seems to have been puzzled by a pupil who got stuck when trying to invent a melody.
During the same stay in Paris, Mozart also wrote his Symphony No. 31, the 'Paris'. It was first performed at a concert in June 1778 and pleased the audience. Mozart happily wrote to his father that people clapped exactly at a passage where he had expected applause.
