The Story

Magnetic Rag is a ragtime piano piece that Scott Joplin published on July 21, 1914. 'Magnetic' means 'like a magnet' or 'very attractive.' He published it through his own company, and it was the last rag he published in his lifetime, three years before his death in 1917.

This piece is different from Joplin's other rags. The opening melody comes back at the end (AABBCCDDAA), and there is also a short coda. The second strain is in G minor and the fourth in B-flat minor, so there are many minor-key parts. The third strain even recalls a 12-bar blues.

Its shadowy sound is often called melancholy and 'haunting,' and some people think it reflects Joplin's feelings in his last years. The pianist and scholar Joshua Rifkin called it a 'valedictory work' and heard a farewell in the final coda. Rifkin's recordings in the 1970s did much to start the Joplin revival.

This is the last rag Joplin published in his life. 'Magnetic' means it pulls you in, like a magnet. Some parts are happy, and some parts are dark. At the end, the music seems to say goodbye.

It is rare for a Joplin rag to bring back its opening melody at the end. Because of this, some suggest that Joplin tried to combine ragtime with classical sonata form, in which a theme appears, changes, and then returns.

Ragtime is usually written in 2/4 time, but this piece is written in 4/4. Joplin doubled the note values, so it sounds the same. He also wrote in the score that the player should keep the same tempo in the minor-key strain.

A ragtime strain usually has 16 bars, but the third strain of this piece has 24. Its first 12 bars resemble the 12-bar blues, a form that became basic to jazz and rock. Here Joplin brings the sound and shape of the blues into a rag.

Joplin suffered from illness in his last years, and some critics link the dark parts of this piece to it. But the ragtime expert Terry Waldo argues that the contrasts are deliberate and deep. The writer James Haskins even suggested it may be Joplin's finest rag.
