楽譜の表紙には、白い服を着て花を持った若い女性の写真がのっています。結婚式の日のフレディだと言われることもありますが、確かな証拠はなく、だれなのかは今もわかっていません。ジョプリンの作品をめぐる、小さななぞの1つです。

The cover shows a photo of a young woman in white holding flowers. Some say it is Freddie on her wedding day, but there is no proof, and nobody knows who she is. It remains one of the small mysteries around Joplin's music.

メロディーには、ラグタイムのもとになったダンス「ケークウォーク」のリズムが使われています。それが3拍子のワルツの伴奏と重なると、4つと3つのリズムが同時に進むような、ふしぎなゆれが生まれます。ラグタイムのリズムを知りつくしたジョプリンらしい、くふうたっぷりのワルツです。

The melody uses the rhythm of the cakewalk, a dance linked to ragtime. When it is set against the three-beat waltz accompaniment, it creates a strange sway, like four beats and three beats moving at once. This clever waltz shows Joplin's special skill with ragtime rhythms.

この曲は、ト長調、変ロ長調、ヘ長調、ロ短調、ニ長調と、5つの部分がそれぞれちがう調で書かれています。最初のメロディーは前奏や終わりの部分にも何度も顔を出し、旅をして家に帰ってくるような組み立てになっています。

The five strains are written in five different keys: G major, B-flat major, F major, B minor, and D major. The main theme appears again and again, even in the introduction and coda, so the piece feels like a journey that returns home.

出版したのは、セントルイスのT・バーンセン・ピアノ製造会社。楽譜の専門の会社ではなく、ピアノを作る会社でした。この会社が出したジョプリンの作品は、ほかに2曲しかありません。

It was published by the T. Bahnsen Piano Manufacturing Company of St. Louis. It was not a music publisher but a company that made pianos. It published only two other works by Joplin.
