組曲「惑星」より 土星（老いをもたらす者）

「土星」は、ホルストの組曲「惑星」の5曲目で、副題は「老いをもたらす者」。にぎやかな「木星」のすぐあとに置かれた、ゆっくりと重い足どりの曲です。年をとっていくことの、さびしさや重さ、そして最後におとずれるおだやかさを描いていると言われます。Saturn is the fifth movement of Holst's suite The Planets, and its subtitle is The Bringer of Old Age. It comes right after the lively Jupiter and moves with slow, heavy steps. It is said to show the loneliness and weight of growing old, and the calm that comes at the end.

「土星」は1915年の半ばに書かれました。始まりでは、フルートやファゴット、ハープが2つの和音を交互にくり返し、まるで時計が時をきざむように聞こえます。打楽器はティンパニと、山場で鳴らされるチューブラー・ベル（鐘）だけ。トロンボーンがおごそかなメロディーを吹き、音楽はだんだん大きくなっていきます。Saturn was written in mid-1915. At the start, flutes, bassoons and harps repeat two chords back and forth, like a ticking clock. The only percussion instruments are timpani and tubular bells, which ring out at the climax. The trombones play a solemn melody, and the music slowly grows louder.

大きな山場で鐘が打ち鳴らされたあと、音楽はしだいに静まり、やすらかな光につつまれるように終わります。ホルスト自身は、7曲の中でこの「土星」をいちばん気に入っていたと言われています。派手な「火星」や「木星」とはちがう、深く味わいのある曲です。After the bells ring at the great climax, the music slowly calms down and ends as if wrapped in peaceful light. Holst himself is said to have liked Saturn best of all seven movements. It is very different from the bold Mars and Jupiter, with a deep and rich character.
