The Planets is a large orchestral suite in seven movements, written by the English composer Gustav Holst between 1914 and 1916. In the order Mars, Venus, Mercury, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune, it portrays the 'character' each planet is said to have. War, peace, a messenger, jollity, old age, magic and mystery: each movement shows a completely different face.
Holst became very interested in astrology after a friend introduced him to it, and he decided to turn the planets' astrological characters into music. That is why Earth, the place from which we look up at the stars in astrology, is not included. Besides a huge orchestra, the last movement, Neptune, uses a women's choir singing offstage.
It was first performed in 1918, near the end of the First World War, for an invited audience, and the complete suite was first played in public in 1920, to great acclaim. Holst also made recordings of it as conductor. When Pluto was discovered in 1930, Holst did not add a movement, but in 2000 the English composer Colin Matthews wrote one called Pluto.
The Planets is a big piece with seven parts. Each part is about a planet, like Mars or Jupiter. There is no part for the Earth! In the last part, a choir sings far away. The music slowly fades into silence.「惑星」は、7つの部分からなる大きな曲です。

The Planets has no movement for Earth. The suite is based on astrology rather than astronomy, and in astrology Earth is where we look up at the stars. The sun and moon are not included either, and the order is not by distance from the sun: it starts with Mars.
Pluto was discovered in 1930, but Holst did not add a movement. In 2000 the composer Colin Matthews wrote 'Pluto, the Renewer'. But in 2006, Pluto was reclassified as a dwarf planet, so the new movement ended up in a slightly awkward position.
In the last movement, Neptune, a women's choir in a separate room sings without words, repeating the same sounds as they slowly fade away. Holst instructed that the door to the choir's room be closed slowly and silently at the end. He created something like a recording's fade-out in a live concert.
In 1976, the Japanese composer Isao Tomita released an album of The Planets played on synthesizers, and it attracted attention overseas as well. It is known as a new way of enjoying classical music, painting space with electronic sounds.
