The First Suite in E-flat for Military Band, written in 1909, is generally seen as Holst's first major work for wind band. It has three movements, Chaconne, Intermezzo and March, and today it is called a cornerstone of the band repertoire. Holst wanted the three movements to be played without a break.
The first movement, Chaconne, is built on an eight-bar theme that the low brass introduce. It is repeated sixteen times in changing forms. The theme also appears in new shapes in the second and third movements, tying the whole suite together. Holst marked many of its parts as optional, so bands of many different sizes could play it.
Its official premiere was in 1920 at the Royal Military School of Music, and it was published in 1921. The suite showed other composers, such as Ralph Vaughan Williams, that serious music could be written for band. Holst's handwritten score was lost for many years, but it turned up again in 1974 and is now kept at the British Library.
This is a very important piece for a wind band. It has three parts. The first part plays the same short tune again and again. The tune comes back in the other parts, too. Many school bands play it.

The Chaconne repeats an eight-bar theme sixteen times. Each time, the instruments and mood change. In the 10th and 11th times, the theme is turned upside down, and in the 12th it becomes a trombone solo. It is the same theme, but it never gets boring.
Holst's 1909 manuscript was lost for many years, and a version with changed instruments for American bands was widely used. In 1974 the manuscript turned up, and in 1984 the composer Colin Matthews published a new edition closer to the original, with help from Holst's daughter Imogen and others.
The title on the manuscript reads 'Suite in E-flat for Military Band by Gustav von Holst.' During the First World War, Holst dropped the German-sounding 'von' from his name. His old name still survives on the score.
Holst marked many of the parts as ad libitum, which means they are optional. This let both small and large bands play the suite. That is probably why it spread to school and town bands all over the world.
