Haydn wrote his Trumpet Concerto in Vienna in 1796, when he was 64. After his great success in London he no longer wrote symphonies, but he composed this bright, noble concerto for Anton Weidinger, a trumpeter at the Viennese court. Today it is one of the most important pieces for every trumpet player.
In those days the trumpet had no valves, so it could play only certain fixed notes. Skilled players could play melodies in the high range, but the in-between notes were hard to play lower down. Weidinger worked on a 'keyed trumpet' with holes and keys, a bit like a woodwind instrument. Haydn wrote music that made full use of the new notes it could play.
It was first performed about four years later, on 28 March 1800, at the Burgtheater in Vienna, with Weidinger as soloist. But when the more practical valve trumpet appeared, the keyed trumpet fell out of use, and the concerto was forgotten for a long time. It returned in the 20th century and is now loved all over the world.
Long ago, a trumpet could play only a few notes. Then a trumpet player made a new trumpet with keys. Now it could play many notes! Haydn wrote this happy music for him. Today trumpet players all over the world play it.

The concerto was finished in 1796, but its premiere came in 1800, about four years later. Nobody knows exactly why, but one idea is that Weidinger needed time to improve his new instrument and master it.
The keyed trumpet was a revolutionary instrument that could play in-between notes, but it fell out of use after the valve trumpet spread. Besides Haydn's, the best-known concerto for it is the one Hummel wrote for Weidinger in 1803. Today both are played on the valve trumpet.
This concerto is often played at trumpet auditions and competitions. It sounds cheerful, but its high notes and fast passages leave nowhere to hide. For players who want to become professionals, it is a very important piece to learn.
Haydn, 'the father of the symphony', wrote more than 100 symphonies. He finished his last one, No. 104, in London in 1795, and the next year he wrote this concerto for the new instrument that Weidinger was developing. Even in his sixties, he was curious about new inventions and ready to try them.
