Symphony No. 101 was written for Haydn's second visit to London, and it was first performed there on 3 March 1794. Its nickname, 'The Clock,' comes from the second movement, where bassoons and plucked strings (pizzicato) keep a steady 'tick-tock' rhythm like a clock. Haydn himself did not give it this name.
Haydn served the noble Esterházy family for many years, but in 1790 he became free to travel, and the concert manager Johann Peter Salomon invited him to London twice. The twelve symphonies he wrote for London are called the 'London' symphonies. No. 101 begins with a slow, dark introduction that suddenly turns into fast, bright music. It is full of tricks to surprise and delight a big concert audience.
The premiere was a great success, and a newspaper reported that the first two movements were played again as encores. The trio, the middle part of the third movement, sounds a little 'off,' as if a clumsy village band were playing. Later, some musicians and publishers did not see Haydn's humor, thought it was a mistake, and 'corrected' the music.
This symphony has a funny name: The Clock. In the second movement, the music goes tick-tock, tick-tock. The bassoons and the strings make the sound. Haydn wrote it for people in London. They loved it!

Haydn wrote more than 30 little pieces for musical clocks, clocks with tiny pipe organs inside. They were built by Father Primitivus Niemecz, the librarian of the Esterházy family. And a melody very much like the minuet in this symphony also appears among the musical clock pieces.
At London concerts of the time, a movement the audience loved was often played again right away as an encore. A newspaper reported that the first two movements were encored at the premiere. Another paper even wrote that connoisseurs thought it was Haydn's best work.
The trio of the third movement sounds a bit awkward, like a clumsy country band. This is thought to be Haydn's humor, but later some people believed it was a mistake and changed the music. Haydn's joke was taken a little too seriously!
In the second movement, the violins sing a graceful melody over the 'tick-tock' of bassoons and pizzicato strings. But in the middle, a stormy section in G minor suddenly breaks in. When it is over, the clock starts ticking again as if nothing had happened. It is not just a relaxed movement; it has real drama.
