Zadok the Priest is one of four Coronation Anthems that Handel wrote in 1727 for the coronation of King George II of Great Britain. An anthem is a church choral piece sung in English. The words come from the Old Testament story in which Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet anoint Solomon as king, and it ends with a great shout of 'God save the King'.
The piece begins with a long introduction in which the strings repeat rippling broken chords and slowly build up. When the tension is at its highest, the choir bursts in with 'Zadok the Priest!' together with trumpets and drums. Handel was born in Germany and had become a British subject only earlier that year, and now he was trusted with music for one of the most important ceremonies in his new country.
The coronation took place on 11 October 1727 at Westminster Abbey in London. Records say the day was not perfect, and this anthem was even sung at the wrong point in the service. Still, the piece was treasured, and since then it has been sung before the anointing at the coronation of every British monarch, including King Charles III in 2023.
This song is for a king's coronation. Handel wrote it in 1727. The music starts very quietly. It grows and grows. Then the choir sings very loudly! People still sing it when a new king or queen gets the crown.

In 1992, the composer Tony Britten arranged this piece to create the UEFA Champions League anthem, the grand song played in stadiums before matches. For football fans, it may bring to mind players walking onto the pitch more than a coronation.
Records of the coronation day say that this anthem was sung at the wrong point in the service, and that another anthem ended 'in confusion'. Keeping a big choir and orchestra together in a huge abbey is hard, now and then.
The words of this anthem come from a prayer that has been sung at English coronations since at least the coronation of King Edgar in 973. Handel gave new music to these very old, traditional words.
Handel was born in Halle, Germany. In early 1727, he became a British subject through an act of Parliament. In June that year, King George I died, and Handel was asked to write the music for the new king's coronation. It was a huge job right after he became British.
