Music for the Royal Fireworks is a suite Handel wrote for a fireworks show in London in 1749. After the Overture come a Bourrée, 'La Paix' (Peace), 'La Réjouissance' (Rejoicing) and Minuets. Originally it was written for a huge band of wind and percussion only: trumpets, horns, oboes, bassoons and timpani.
King George II held the fireworks to celebrate the end of the War of the Austrian Succession, with the peace treaty of 1748. It is said that the king wanted only military instruments, which led to some back-and-forth with Handel, who wanted strings too. The score calls for a huge wind section, including 24 oboes and 12 bassoons.
Six days before the event, a public rehearsal at Vauxhall Gardens drew more than 12,000 people, and a magazine of the time reported that carriages were stuck on London Bridge for three hours. On the night itself, part of the wooden building for the fireworks caught fire. Later Handel made a version with strings, which is also often played today.
In 1749, London had a big fireworks show. The king asked Handel to write music for it. The music used many trumpets, horns, and drums. Before the show, more than 12,000 people came to hear it. There was a big traffic jam!1749年、ロンドンで大きな花火大会がありました。

The public rehearsal was held at Vauxhall Gardens, a popular pleasure garden in London. More than 12,000 people rushed there, and carriages are said to have been stuck on London Bridge for three hours. The rehearsal became big news even before the main event.
On the night of the event, a huge wooden building had been built in Green Park to launch the fireworks. But during the show, part of it is said to have caught fire. Even so, the music from that night lives on as one of Handel's most famous works.
It is said that King George II wanted only military instruments and asked for no strings, such as violins. Handel seems to have wanted strings too, and later, at a concert for the Foundling Hospital, he performed the music with strings added.
'La Paix' (Peace) and 'La Réjouissance' (Rejoicing) have French titles. Fitting for a celebration of the end of a war, the suite contrasts calm peace with bursting joy. Even in Britain at the time, French was often used for titles like these.
