The Story

Andaluza' is the fifth piece in Twelve Spanish Dances, a set of piano pieces by the Spanish composer Enrique Granados. 'Andaluza' means 'in the style of Andalusia', the southern part of Spain, but this title is thought to have been added after Granados died. Its slightly sad but passionate melody in E minor sings over an accompaniment that sounds like a strumming guitar.

The set was probably written around 1888 to 1890, when Granados was in his early twenties, from his student days in Paris to the time after his return to Barcelona in 1889. He took the rhythms and moods of Spanish dances and brought them to life on the piano. In 1890, Granados himself played the dances in Barcelona.

Famous composers such as Massenet, Saint-Saëns, Grieg and Cui received copies of the music and praised it, and Granados became widely known. 'Andaluza' is one of the most popular pieces in the set, and it has been arranged for guitar, violin, orchestra and more. On the guitar, it sounds as if it had been written for that instrument from the start.

This is a piano piece from Spain. It sounds like a Spanish guitar. The melody is a little sad, but it is full of passion. The composer was still young, in his early 20s. Today, many guitar players love it, too.

Granados sent copies of these dances to famous composers in other countries. The French composer Massenet is said to have called him 'the Spanish Grieg'. Like Grieg, who put the spirit of Norway into his music, Granados turned the spirit of Spain into art. It was high praise.

The set is often called Op. 37, but Granados never made an official list of opus numbers. The numbers were added later to keep things in order, and some publishers call it Op. 5 or Op. 31. So don't worry if you see a different number on the music!

It is said that Albéniz, an older Spanish composer, kept a copy of these dances on his piano. Granados and Albéniz both introduced Spanish music to the world, and both were excellent pianists. Today, music by both of them is often played on the guitar, too.

In 1916, Granados was returning from New York, where his opera had its premiere. His ship was attacked by a German submarine, and he died. It is said that he jumped from a lifeboat into the sea to try to save his wife. He was 48 years old.
