Enrique Granados was born on 27 July 1867 in Lleida, a town in Catalonia, Spain. His father was an army officer. He studied piano in Barcelona and later learned from Felip Pedrell, a scholar of Spanish music. In 1887 he went to Paris and polished his skills with private lessons from the pianist Charles-Wilfrid de Bériot.
From around 1890 Granados began presenting his Twelve Spanish Dances, which combine the rhythms of Spanish dances with romantic melodies. No. 5, 'Andaluza', is especially famous. His opera María del Carmen caught the attention of King Alfonso XIII, and in 1903 his Allegro de concierto won a competition at the Madrid Royal Conservatory.
Granados was fascinated by the world of 18th-century Madrid painted by the Spanish artist Francisco Goya. In 1911 he completed Goyescas, a piano suite inspired by Goya's art. One piece, 'The Maiden and the Nightingale', is a beautiful song of a young woman's love. He later turned the suite into an opera, which was premiered in New York on 28 January 1916.
After the premiere, Granados was invited to play for President Woodrow Wilson at the White House. Because of this he missed his planned ship and sailed home to Europe on a later one. On 24 March 1916, the ferry Sussex, crossing from England to France, was torpedoed by a German submarine, and Granados and his wife died. He was 48. The music academy he founded in Barcelona went on to train great pianists.
Enrique Granados was born in Spain in 1867. He was a great pianist. He wrote Spanish Dances for the piano. He loved the paintings of Goya. He wrote music about them. Sadly, he died at sea in 1916.

After his opera's premiere in New York, Granados was invited to play for President Wilson at the White House. Because of this, he let his original ship go and took a later one home. It was on that journey that tragedy struck.
It is said that when the Sussex was attacked, Granados tried to rescue his wife, Amparo, from the sea, and was himself lost in the waves. But eyewitness accounts differ, and nobody knows for certain exactly what happened.
Goyescas, premiered at the Metropolitan Opera in New York on 28 January 1916, was the first opera ever sung in Spanish at that famous house. Granados himself was there and received a warm ovation.
Granados recorded his playing on piano rolls, paper rolls with holes punched in them that capture a performance. Although he died over a hundred years ago, those rolls can still be played back, so we can hear how he himself played.
Goyescas means 'things in the style of Goya'. Granados admired the stylish young majos and majas of Madrid shown in Goya's paintings, and he captured their loves and lives on the piano. It is a work where painting and music meet.
The music academy Granados founded in Barcelona was carried on by his pupils after his death. One of the students there was Alicia de Larrocha, who became one of the great Spanish pianists of the 20th century. In this way, his music passed to the next generation.
