The Story

The "Faust Waltz" is a waltz with chorus from Act 2 of "Faust," an opera by the French composer Charles Gounod. Near the gates of the town, villagers dance happily as they sing "like the light breeze." The bright, spinning melody brings the busy fun of a festival to life.

The opera is based on "Faust" by the great German writer Goethe. Faust, an old scholar, makes a deal with the devil Méphistophélès and becomes young again. In this waltz scene, Méphistophélès joins the dancers too, and Faust speaks to the pure young woman Marguerite for the first time. Behind the happy music, a sad love story begins.

Faust" was first performed on 19 March 1859 at the Théâtre Lyrique in Paris. At first it had spoken dialogue, but later the spoken parts were set to music, and in 1869 it was staged at the Paris Opéra with a ballet added. It became the most often performed opera there, and in 1883 the Metropolitan Opera in New York opened with it.

This is a happy waltz from an opera. People dance and sing at a town festival. A man named Faust is there. He made a deal with the devil! At this party, he meets a young woman and falls in love.

On 22 October 1883, when the Metropolitan Opera in New York opened, the first opera it staged was "Faust." It was even sung in Italian, not French. It went on to be performed there hundreds of times.

Liszt, the wizard of the piano, wrote a brilliant solo piano piece based on this waltz, the "Waltz from Gounod's Faust." Turning hit tunes from operas into dazzling piano pieces was one of Liszt's specialties.

Goethe's "Faust" was hugely popular with composers. It inspired many great works, such as Berlioz's "The Damnation of Faust" and Liszt's "Faust Symphony" and "Mephisto Waltzes." The story of a man who makes a deal with the devil fascinated people that much.

At its premiere, "Faust" had spoken lines between the songs. For a production in Strasbourg in 1860, Gounod turned the spoken parts into sung recitatives. This fully sung version later spread around the world.
