The Story

The Berceuse from Jocelyn is a song for tenor, a high male voice, from the opera Jocelyn by the French composer Benjamin Godard. The opera was first performed in February 1888 at the Théâtre de la Monnaie in Brussels, Belgium. A gentle melody floats over an accompaniment that rocks like a cradle.

The opera is based on Jocelyn, a long poem by the French poet Alphonse de Lamartine. It is set at the end of the 18th century, around the time of the French Revolution, in Grenoble and the mountains nearby. The hero, Jocelyn, quietly sings to someone dear who is sleeping: 'Oh, do not wake yet.' The word berceuse means lullaby in French.

The whole opera is rarely performed today, but this lullaby became hugely popular. Many great tenors, such as John McCormack, Beniamino Gigli, Jussi Björling and Plácido Domingo, recorded it, and so did the cellist Pablo Casals. It is still loved as a short piece for violin or cello.

This is a lullaby from an opera. A man sings it very softly. He says, 'Please do not wake up yet.' People do not see the opera much now. But this song is still famous.

Jocelyn is a large opera with the opus number 100, but the full opera is rarely staged today. Still, its lullaby has been recorded again and again and played all over the world. It is a rare case of one song keeping an opera's name alive.

The libretto was written by the poet Armand Silvestre and the tenor Victor Capoul. Capoul also recorded this lullaby himself. One of the writers was a singer himself, so he knew how singers feel.

Godard was born in Paris in 1849. He was a gifted violinist from childhood and studied at the Paris Conservatoire. He wrote a great deal of music, but he died of tuberculosis in 1895 at the age of 45.

The melody is so beautiful that it is often played by instruments alone. Pablo Casals, one of the greatest cellists, made a recording of it. There are also arrangements for piano trio and other groups.
