バンジャマン・ゴダール

バンジャマン・ゴダールは1849年8月18日、フランスのパリに生まれました。小さいころからヴァイオリンを習い、1863年にパリ音楽院に入学します。ヴァイオリンをベルギー出身の名手ヴュータンに、作曲をルベルに学びました。先生ヴュータンのお供で、2度ドイツへ演奏旅行にも行っています。Benjamin Godard was born in Paris on 18 August 1849. He learned the violin from an early age and entered the Paris Conservatoire in 1863. There he studied violin with the great Belgian violinist Henri Vieuxtemps and composition with Henri Reber. He also travelled to Germany twice with Vieuxtemps on concert tours.

ゴダールはたくさんの曲を書きました。オペラは8つ、交響曲は5つ、ヴァイオリン協奏曲「ロマンティック協奏曲」（1876年）、弦楽四重奏曲3つ、そして100曲をこえる歌曲です。1878年には、「劇的交響曲」と名づけた作品「タッソー」でパリ市の作曲賞をもう1人と同時に受賞し、注目を集めました。Godard was a prolific composer. He wrote eight operas, five symphonies, the Concerto romantique for violin (1876), three string quartets and more than a hundred songs. In 1878 his 'dramatic symphony' Le Tasse shared the City of Paris composition prize, and it brought him wide attention.

1887年、ゴダールはパリ音楽院の教授になりました。翌1888年2月25日、ベルギーのブリュッセルにあるモネ劇場で、フランスの詩人ラマルティーヌの物語詩をもとにしたオペラ「ジョスラン」が初演されます。オペラ全体は今ではあまり上演されませんが、その中の「子守歌」は大人気になりました。1889年にはレジオン・ドヌール勲章を受けています。In 1887 Godard became a professor at the Paris Conservatoire. On 25 February 1888 his opera Jocelyn, based on a long poem by the French poet Lamartine, was premiered at the Théâtre de la Monnaie in Brussels. The opera itself is rarely staged today, but its Berceuse, or lullaby, became hugely popular. In 1889 he was made a knight of the Legion of Honour.

しかしゴダールは結核という病気にかかり、1895年1月10日、南フランスのカンヌで45歳の若さで亡くなりました。オペラ「ラ・ヴィヴァンディエール」はオーケストラの部分が仕上がっていなかったため、作曲家ポール・ヴィダルが完成させ、同じ年にパリで上演されて成功しました。今ではゴダールの名前は、何よりも「ジョスランの子守歌」で知られています。However, Godard fell ill with tuberculosis, and he died in Cannes on 10 January 1895, aged only 45. The orchestration of his opera La Vivandière was not finished, so the composer Paul Vidal completed it, and the opera was successfully staged in Paris that same year. Today Godard's name is known above all for the Berceuse from Jocelyn.
