3つの前奏曲

「3つの前奏曲」は、ジョージ・ガーシュウィンのピアノ曲集です。第1番は変ロ長調の元気な曲、第2番は嬰ハ短調のゆったりした曲、第3番は変ホ短調で始まるはげしい曲。3曲あわせても約5分という短さですが、ジャズのリズムやブルースの響きと、クラシックのピアノ曲の形が見事に結びついています。Three Preludes is a set of piano pieces by George Gershwin. No. 1 in B-flat major is lively, No. 2 in C-sharp minor is slow and calm, and No. 3, which starts in E-flat minor, is fiery. All three together last only about five minutes, yet they beautifully combine jazz rhythms and blues sounds with the form of classical piano music.

1926年12月、ガーシュウィンはニューヨークのルーズベルト・ホテルでの演奏会で、自分で前奏曲を弾いて初演しました。最初は24曲の前奏曲を作り、「メルティング・ポット（人種のるつぼ）」という題にする計画もあったと言われます。けれども演奏会で弾かれたのは5〜6曲ほどで、出版されたのは3曲だけでした。In December 1926, Gershwin gave the first performance himself at a concert at the Roosevelt Hotel in New York. It is said that he first planned to write 24 preludes and call the set 'The Melting Pot.' But only five or six were played in his concerts, and just three were published.

曲集は、友人で音楽の相談相手だったビル・デイリーにささげられました。出版されなかった前奏曲のうち2曲は、ヴァイオリンとピアノのための「ショート・ストーリー」に作りかえられています。3つの前奏曲はその後さまざまな楽器用に編曲され、1992年には振付家マーク・モリスがこの曲でソロのダンス作品も作りました。The set is dedicated to Bill Daly, Gershwin's friend and musical adviser. Two of the unpublished preludes were rearranged as 'Short Story' for violin and piano. The Three Preludes have since been arranged for many instruments, and in 1992 the choreographer Mark Morris created a solo dance to them.
