George Gershwin was born on 26 September 1898 in Brooklyn, New York. His birth name was Jacob Gershwine, and his parents were Jewish immigrants from the Russian Empire. When his parents bought a piano for his older brother Ira, it was George who couldn't keep away from it. His parents were surprised, and Ira was relieved.
In 1914, at fifteen, George left school and became a song plugger on New York's Tin Pan Alley, the street of music publishers, earning fifteen dollars a week. His job was to play new songs on the piano to sell the sheet music. In 1919 his song 'Swanee', made popular by the star singer Al Jolson, became his first big national hit. After that he teamed up with Ira, who became his lyricist, to write one Broadway musical after another.
On 12 February 1924, at a concert organised by the bandleader Paul Whiteman, Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue for piano and band was premiered. By brilliantly combining jazz and classical music, it established him as a major composer of concert music as well. The orchestration was done by Ferde Grofé. Gershwin followed it with the Concerto in F and An American in Paris (1928), a musical picture of a stroll through Paris.
His musical Of Thee I Sing opened in 1931 and the next year became the first musical to win the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. In 1935 he created the opera Porgy and Bess, famous for the song 'Summertime'. The original production did not earn back its costs, but its 124 performances were remarkable for an opera, and it is now regarded as one of the great American operas. He moved to Hollywood to write for films, but in 1937 he died of a brain tumour in Los Angeles, only 38 years old.
George Gershwin was born in New York in 1898. His parents bought a piano for his brother. But George played it all the time! He wrote many popular songs. Then he wrote Rhapsody in Blue. It mixes jazz and classical music.

One day in 1924, Ira was reading a newspaper when he saw an announcement that George was writing a jazz concerto for Paul Whiteman's concert. George, it is said, had not taken the plan seriously, and he then wrote Rhapsody in Blue in just a few weeks.
Rhapsody in Blue opens with a clarinet sliding up from a low note to a high one. It is often said that the clarinettist Ross Gorman played the slide as a joke during rehearsal, and Gershwin liked it so much that he kept it.
In An American in Paris, real car horns are used as instruments to capture the noise of Paris traffic. Gershwin is said to have bought Paris taxi horns and taken them home with him.
Gershwin asked Ravel and the great teacher Nadia Boulanger for lessons, but they refused, fearing strict training would spoil his own style. A famous story says that when Ravel heard how much Gershwin earned, he joked, 'You should give me lessons!' Some versions credit Stravinsky instead, so the truth is unclear.
Of Thee I Sing opened in 1931, and in 1932 it became the first musical to win the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. But the prize went to the writers and to Ira for the lyrics, not to George for the music. George was honoured only in 1998, with a special Pulitzer citation, 61 years after his death.
In Japan, Rhapsody in Blue became widely familiar as the ending music of the 2006 TV drama Nodame Cantabile, set in a music college. In America it has long been known as the theme music of United Airlines.
