The Story

An American in Paris is an orchestral piece George Gershwin wrote in 1928. In his own words, it portrays 'the impressions of an American visitor in Paris.' We hear him strolling through busy streets, painted with a touch of jazz, and the slow blues in the middle is often described as a feeling of homesickness.

In the spring of 1928, Gershwin traveled in Europe and stayed in Paris. The piece grew from a short tune called 'Very Parisienne,' which he had written in 1926 as a gift for his hosts in Paris, Robert and Mabel Schirmer. Saxophones, a celesta, and four taxi horns are added to the orchestra to bring the busy streets to life.

It was first performed on December 13, 1928, at Carnegie Hall in New York by the New York Philharmonic, conducted by Walter Damrosch. In 1951, MGM made the musical film An American in Paris, starring Gene Kelly, and it won the Academy Award for Best Picture. Its long ballet at the end became a celebrated scene in the history of movie musicals.

This music is about an American in Paris. He walks around the busy city. You can hear real taxi horns in the music! Later, he feels a little homesick. Then he feels happy again.

Gershwin hoped to study with the French composer Maurice Ravel, but Ravel reportedly said no because he did not want to spoil Gershwin's own style. A famous story says Ravel told him, 'Why be a second-rate Ravel when you can be a first-rate Gershwin?', but the exact words are not certain. The famous teacher Nadia Boulanger is also said to have turned him down.

The score includes four taxi horns, and Gershwin gave each one a specific pitch: A-flat, B-flat, D, and a low A. But in many performances today, they are not played at the correct pitches.

Gershwin disliked Damrosch's slow tempo at the first performances, and he is said to have walked out of a matinee. For a composer to leave a concert of his own music, he must have been very unhappy.

The long ballet at the end of the 1951 film, built around this music, cost 500,000 dollars. It is said to have been the most expensive musical number ever filmed at that time.
