The Story

The Florentiner March was written in 1907 by the Czech composer Julius Fučík. The title means 'Florentine,' from the Italian city of Florence, and its subtitle is 'Grande marcia italiana' (Grand Italian March). Fučík was a military bandmaster, also famous for Entrance of the Gladiators.

At that time, Fučík was living in Budapest, Hungary. According to an account based on his diary, on December 3, 1907, the piece was called 'La rosa di Toscana' (The Rose of Tuscany), and by January 6, 1908, he had renamed it. There is no evidence that a specific event in Florence inspired it, and why he changed the title is not clear.

It was published in 1908 and became one of Fučík's best-known works. It is a concert march, written more for listening than for marching. The contrast between light and grand sections makes it very colorful, and it is still a favorite of bands around the world at concerts and festive events.

This march has an Italian name. It means 'from Florence.' Florence is a beautiful city in Italy. But the composer was from the Czech lands! First, he called it 'The Rose of Tuscany.'

Fučík first named this piece 'La rosa di Toscana' (The Rose of Tuscany). Tuscany is the region where Florence is. Records show that he changed the title to 'Florentiner' only about a month later.

From the title, you might think Fučík wrote about his memories of Florence. But no evidence has been found that a specific event in Florence inspired it. Why he chose a title about Florence is still not clear.

In the trio, the piccolo, the smallest and highest flute, decorates the music with quick notes, like a bird singing. For band piccolo players, it is known as a piece where they can really show their skill.

Fučík was a Czech born in Prague who worked in the bands of Austria-Hungary. He gave the march a German title, 'Florentiner,' and an Italian subtitle, 'Grand Italian March.' It is a truly international march, with words from several languages.
