The Story

Fauré's Clair de lune is an 1887 song set to a poem by Paul Verlaine. The poem describes people in masks singing and dancing in the moonlight. They seem to be having fun, but they do not quite believe in their own happiness, and there is a touch of sadness about them. Fauré captured this strange mood in elegant music.

What makes this song special is that the piano and the voice seem to go their own ways, almost like two different pieces. From the start, the piano plays a graceful melody like a minuet, an old court dance. The voice enters quietly on top, as if talking to itself. Dance music and a lonely song come together to create a dreamy moonlit world.

In 1888, Fauré also arranged the song for orchestra, and it was performed that same year. In 1919 he included it in his stage music Masques et bergamasques. The young Debussy also set the same poem to music, and his famous piano piece Clair de lune is thought to take its title from this poem.

This is a song about the moon. People wear masks and dance under the moonlight. They look happy, but they are a little sad. The piano plays a dance, and the voice sings softly on top. Debussy also wrote music for the same poem.

In 1882, before Fauré, the teenage Debussy set this poem by Verlaine to music (and later he wrote a completely new setting). Debussy also included a piece called 'Clair de lune' in his piano work Suite bergamasque. One poem gave birth to several masterpieces!

In the poem, 'masques et bergamasques' means masked figures and dances from the Bergamo region of Italy. Verlaine's collection Fêtes galantes, which includes this poem, is often said to be inspired by the world of Watteau, the 18th-century French painter of nobles enjoying parties outdoors.

The minuet-like melody in the piano is so beautiful it could be a piece by itself, and it keeps going even after the voice comes in. The singer is not so much accompanied as telling a story over dance music. It is an unusual song in which the piano almost seems to be the star.

At the end of the poem, the moonlight makes the birds dream in the trees, and the fountains sob with joy among the marble statues. In this scene, where sadness and beauty melt together, Fauré's music fades quietly away.
