The Story

Autumn' is the third concerto of The Four Seasons. In the first movement, the villagers celebrate the harvest with singing, dancing and drinking. After a bright, strong theme, the solo violin wobbles and stumbles like someone who has had too much to drink, which is very funny.

The second movement is titled 'Sleeping Drunkards.' The festival is over, and the whole village falls into a quiet sleep. The strings play softly and quietly, while the harpsichord slowly spreads out its chords, creating a dreamy atmosphere. It is a quiet rest between two lively movements.

The third movement is 'The Hunt.' At dawn, hunters set out with horns, guns and dogs to chase their prey. The strings imitate the sound of hunting horns, and the fleeing animal is painted with great speed. In this way, Vivaldi painted seasonal life like a picture scroll in sound.

This piece is about autumn. People in a village have a big harvest party. They sing and dance. Then they fall asleep. The next morning, hunters go out with horns and dogs.

The poem for the first movement tells how the villagers get drunk on the wine of Bacchus, the god of wine. The solo violin plays phrases that suddenly speed up or trip, like someone staggering. You can feel the humor of a composer from 300 years ago.

In the second movement, the harpsichord, usually just an accompanist, is told to play its chords as arpeggios, one note at a time. Over the soft, held chords of the strings, its sparkling sound creates a dreamlike mood. It is a quiet movement that suggests sleep.

The Four Seasons are the first four of twelve concertos in the set 'The Contest between Harmony and Invention' (Op. 8). The set was dedicated to Count Morzin, a nobleman from Bohemia. So The Four Seasons was only part of a bigger collection, and later these four became especially famous.

Vivaldi is said to have written about 500 concertos, and more than 200 of them are for violin. He also wrote many operas and church works. He was known for composing extremely fast and was truly a king of the concerto.
