Chanson de Matin is a short piece for violin and piano by the English composer Edward Elgar. Its French title means Morning Song. It was published in 1899 and became a pair with the earlier Chanson de Nuit, or Night Song, as Op. 15.
No one knows exactly when it was written. Some say around 1889 or 1890, but what is certain is that Elgar sent it to his publisher in March 1899. Elgar was a violinist himself and taught the violin in his home area of Worcester, so the melody is made to sing beautifully on the violin.
In 1901, Elgar arranged it for orchestra, and in September that year it was played at the Queen's Hall in London with Chanson de Nuit, conducted by Henry Wood. Some people feel Chanson de Nuit is deeper, but the friendly melody of Chanson de Matin made it more popular.
This is a short and happy piece. Its name means 'Morning Song.' The violin sings a sweet melody. It sounds like a fresh morning. The composer also wrote a 'Night Song.'

Chanson de Matin is Op. 15 No. 2, and Chanson de Nuit is Op. 15 No. 1. They were put together as a pair, and their orchestral versions were first played together in 1901. If you listen to the calm night piece and the bright morning piece in a row, you can feel a whole day go by.
Some say the piece was written around 1889 or 1890, but the firm records begin in 1899, the year it was published. That was also the year Elgar's breakthrough work, the Enigma Variations, was first performed. Once he became famous, his older small pieces may have found their moment too.
In the second movement of his String Quartet in E minor, written in 1918, Elgar briefly quotes the melody of Chanson de Matin. It is like a secret greeting to one of his own early pieces.
Elgar taught himself composition almost entirely. When he was young, as the son of a music shop owner, he earned a living by teaching the violin and playing in local groups. That experience shows in the violin-friendly melody of Chanson de Matin.
