The Story

Symphony No. 8 is a bright, open-hearted symphony that Dvořák wrote in 1889. It is full of warm, happy music that suggests the Czech countryside, birdsong and village dances. It has four movements, and the last movement begins with a trumpet fanfare.

Dvořák wrote this symphony at his summer home in the Czech village of Vysoká. It was a quiet place surrounded by woods and ponds, and he is said to have enjoyed walking and caring for his pigeons while he composed. He finished it in only about two and a half months, from late summer to autumn 1889. In the first movement, the flute plays a melody like a bird's song.

It was first performed in Prague in February 1890, conducted by Dvořák himself. The score was published not by his usual publisher, Simrock, but by Novello in England. Because of this, it has sometimes been nicknamed the 'English' Symphony, especially in Japan, but the music itself is not English at all. Today it is one of his most popular symphonies.

Dvořák wrote this symphony in the countryside. He had a summer house near a forest. You can hear birds in the music! At the start of the last part, trumpets play a big call. A famous conductor said it is a call to dance, not to fight!

The third movement is a graceful, slightly wistful piece in three beats, swaying like a waltz. Let yourself relax into it.
The last movement begins with a trumpet fanfare. Then enjoy how the melody first sung by the cellos keeps changing.

This symphony was published by Novello in London, not by Simrock in Germany. It is said that Dvořák and Simrock disagreed over the terms, because Simrock wanted small pieces that sold better. So it was sometimes called the 'English' Symphony, but the music is full of Czech character.

The last movement opens with a trumpet fanfare. The great Czech conductor Rafael Kubelík is reported to have told an orchestra in rehearsal, 'In Bohemia, the trumpets never call to battle — they always call to the dance!' After the bold call comes a peaceful melody sung by the cellos.

Dvořák is known to have kept pigeons at his country home in Vysoká. He also loved trains and was a famous railway fan. The relaxed brightness of this symphony may reflect the happy, peaceful days he spent in the countryside he loved.

This symphony is in G major, a bright key, but it begins with a warm, dark melody in a minor key, played by cellos and other instruments. Then the flute plays a cheerful, birdlike tune, and suddenly light shines in. This switch from dark to bright is the first surprise of the piece.
