The Story

Symphony No. 7 is a symphony Dvořák wrote in 1884–1885. Unlike the bright, peaceful Eighth, it is in D minor, a dark and serious key, and it is a powerful work full of tension and passion. It has four movements. The third movement has bouncing rhythms like a Czech dance, and the last movement builds to a mighty climax.

In 1884, Dvořák conducted his Stabat Mater in London with great success, and he was made an honorary member of the Philharmonic Society of London. The Society asked him to write this symphony. In a letter to a friend, he wrote that the new symphony must be able to stir the world. He is also thought to have been strongly inspired by Brahms's Third Symphony, which he had heard not long before.

It was first performed in London in April 1885, conducted by Dvořák himself, and it was a great success. Today many people think it is one of his finest symphonies. The British music scholar Donald Tovey praised it so highly that he placed it among the greatest symphonies written since Beethoven.

This symphony is dark and strong. Dvořák wrote it for London. He wanted to make music that could move the world! One day, he saw a special train at a station. Then the first melody came to him.

Listening Guide

At the start, the violas and cellos play a dark, uneasy theme in a low range. This is the theme he thought of at the station.
In the third movement, the rhythm bounces like a Czech dance, and the beats seem to shift in a fun way. Feel the rhythm in your body.
At the end of the last movement, the music turns from dark D minor to bright D major and closes powerfully. Don't miss that moment.

Dvořák, a big railway fan, left a note in the score saying that the main theme of the first movement came to him in 1884, when a special train from Pest (Budapest) arrived at the station. The train is said to have carried people coming to Prague for a Czech national festival.

Today it is called No. 7, but when it was published it was 'Symphony No. 2'. Many of Dvořák's early symphonies were not published in his lifetime, so numbers were given in order of publication. Later, the symphonies were renumbered in the order they were written. In the same way, the 'New World' Symphony was once called No. 5.

It was Brahms who helped launch Dvořák's career by introducing him to a publisher. This symphony is thought to have been strongly inspired by Brahms's Third Symphony. Dvořák's wish to write a serious symphony worthy of the older composer he admired may be why this work feels so weighty.

After his first visit in 1884, Dvořák traveled to England many times; it is said he went there nine times. His choral works and symphonies were hugely popular there, and Cambridge University gave him an honorary doctorate. This symphony was born from his close ties with England.
