The Story

Serenade for Strings is a piece for string orchestra that Dvořák wrote in 1875. A serenade was first a song sung in the evening under a lover's window. Later the word came to mean a light, pleasant piece for a group of players. It has five movements: a gentle song, an elegant waltz, a lively scherzo, a dreamy slow movement and an energetic finale.

Dvořák wrote this piece in only about twelve days in May 1875. He had married in 1873, and his first son was born the next year. Then, in 1875, he received an Austrian state grant for young artists, which made his life a little easier. People say the bright, open mood of this music reflects that happy time in his life.

It was first performed in Prague in December 1876, conducted by Adolf Čech, and it was well received. Near the end of the last movement, the gentle melody from the first movement returns, so the whole piece comes full circle. Together with Tchaikovsky's Serenade for Strings, written five years later, it is loved around the world.

This piece is only for string instruments, like violins and cellos. It has five parts. Dvořák wrote it in about twelve days! Good things were happening in his life then. The music sounds warm and happy.

Dvořák wrote this five-movement piece in only about twelve days, from 3 to 14 May 1875. He was writing very quickly that year and also produced many other works, including his Fifth Symphony and chamber music.

Before this, Dvořák lived a poor life, working as a viola player in a theater orchestra and as a church organist. In 1875, he received an Austrian state grant, which gave him more time to compose. Through this grant, he later made a connection with Brahms, who was one of the judges.

As the last movement nears its end, the gentle melody from the first movement suddenly comes back. In the middle of the lively music, it is like stopping for a moment to remember. Then the piece ends with fresh energy. The beginning and the end are cleverly tied together.

Tchaikovsky's Serenade for Strings (1880) is also famous, and Dvořák's was written five years earlier. The two are often recorded together on one album, and many people enjoy comparing these two great string serenades.
