The Story

Piano Quintet No. 2 is chamber music for five players: a piano and a string quartet of two violins, viola and cello. Dvořák wrote it in 1887. It has four colorful movements: a singing first movement, a second movement that switches between sadness and joy, a third movement based on a fast Czech dance, and an energetic finale.

Back in 1872, as a young man, Dvořák had written another piano quintet in the same key, A major. His attempt to revise that old piece is said to have led him to write a new one. He composed it at his summer home in the Czech village of Vysoká, from August to October 1887. The second movement is a dumka, a Slavic form in which a sad song and a happy dance take turns.

It was first performed in Prague in January 1888 at a concert of an artists' society. Today it is considered one of the greatest works of its kind, along with the piano quintets by Schumann and Brahms. With its friendly melodies and the fun of five instruments singing to one another, it is a great first piece for anyone new to chamber music.

Five people play this music. One plays the piano, and four play string instruments. The music is sometimes sad and sometimes happy. Dvořák tried to fix an old piece. Then he wrote a new one!

In 1887, Dvořák was trying to revise a piano quintet he had written in 1872 (Op. 5). This work is thought to have led him to write a completely new piece instead. That new piece is this Quintet No. 2.

The dumka in the second movement was originally a sad song from Ukraine and other Slavic lands. Dvořák made it a special kind of music by switching between a slow, sad song and a fast, happy dance, so the mood keeps changing. He liked this form and used it in many works.

The third movement is marked 'furiant'. A furiant is a fast Czech dance whose rhythm usually seems to mix two and three beats. In this movement, quick, springy rhythms bring out the spirit of the dance. Dvořák often used this bouncy dance in his symphonies and Slavonic Dances too.

This piece was written at Dvořák's summer home in Vysoká, a village far from Prague. He loved walking in nature there, keeping pigeons and taking life easy. His later Symphony No. 8 and the opera Rusalka were also composed there.
