Symphony No. 9, 'From the New World', was written in 1893 in America by the Czech composer Antonín Dvořák. The 'New World' means America. Dvořák had been invited to New York to lead a music school, and he filled the symphony with what he saw and heard in the new country, along with his love for his home, Bohemia.
Dvořák was very interested in African American spirituals and Native American music. Harry Burleigh, an African American singer who studied at the school, is said to have sung spirituals for him. Still, the melodies are not borrowed folk songs; Dvořák wrote them himself. The English horn melody in the second movement is especially famous.
It was premiered at Carnegie Hall in New York in December 1893 and was a great success. Later, Dvořák's student William Arms Fisher added words to the second-movement melody, creating the song 'Goin' Home'. In Japan, the tune is loved as 'Tooki yama ni hi wa ochite' and 'Ieji'.
This symphony is from America. A Czech composer wrote it in New York. He missed his home country. The slow part has a very famous melody. In Japan, many schools play it in the evening, when it is time to go home.

In 1969, astronaut Neil Armstrong is said to have taken a recording of the New World Symphony on Apollo 11. Music born in the 'New World' of America traveled on to an even newer world, the Moon.
In the fourth movement, the cymbals play just once, and not even very loudly. In a symphony of about forty minutes, that single moment is the player's only job. It is famous as a nerve-racking 'one chance' piece for cymbal players.
Dvořák loved steam locomotives. In Prague, he is said to have gone to the station to watch trains and even remembered engine numbers. In New York, he enjoyed going to the harbor to watch the big steamships instead.
Dvořák chose the title 'From the New World' himself. He is said to have written it on the score just before handing it to the conductor. Some say it carries the feeling of 'a message home from the New World'.
