The Story

Valse romantique is a piano piece Debussy wrote in 1890, when he was about 28. Riding on the three-beat rhythm of a waltz, a slightly wistful, elegant melody spins round and round. It is a graceful, friendly piece, the kind you might hear at a salon, a social gathering in a wealthy Paris home.

At this time, Debussy was not yet famous and was often short of money. In January 1891, he signed a contract selling this piece to the Paris publisher Choudens, together with the Tarentelle styrienne and the Ballade slave. Piano pieces for playing at home sold well, so this was probably also work to pay the bills.

It was published in 1891 and dedicated to a woman named Rose Depecker. The title is very similar to the Trois valses romantiques by the older composer Emmanuel Chabrier. It shows a younger, simpler romantic side of Debussy, different from the 'Impressionist' style he became famous for.

This is a waltz for piano. A waltz has three beats: one, two, three. Debussy wrote it when he was young and poor. He sold it with two other pieces. The music is pretty and a little sad.

On January 31, 1891, Debussy signed a contract with the publisher Choudens, selling the rights to this piece together with the Tarentelle styrienne and the Ballade slave. The publisher advertised the pieces like a series on the cover, but Debussy probably never meant them as a set.

The title 'Valse romantique' is very similar to Emmanuel Chabrier's Trois valses romantiques for two pianos, and it may be a nod to him. Chabrier, with his bright and witty style, had a big influence on young French composers of the time.

The Tarentelle styrienne, sold together with this waltz, was later republished as Danse. In the 1920s, after Debussy's death, Ravel arranged it for orchestra. One of its partners was reborn in the hands of another great composer.

Unlike Chopin or Strauss, Debussy wrote few solo piano pieces called waltzes. The best known are this early one and the later La plus que lente. Listening to both shows how much his sound changed in 20 years.
