The Story

Fireworks is the twelfth piece in Debussy's second book of Preludes, written in 1912–1913. It is also the very last of all 24 preludes. Notes crackle, whizz upward, burst open and fade away, just like fireworks in the night sky. It is known as one of the hardest of all the preludes.

The piece is thought to show the fireworks on the night of July 14, France's national holiday. Debussy used glissandos, where the fingers slide across the keys, and glittering repeated high notes to show light and sound at the same time. Clashing chords also create the feeling of flying sparks.

At the end, when the fireworks are over and all is quiet, a piece of the French national anthem, La Marseillaise, is heard faintly from far away. It is a very stylish way to end a festival night. Book 2 was published in 1913, and Fireworks is still a popular concert piece today.

This piano piece shows fireworks at night. The notes go up fast and then pop! It is very hard to play. At the end, you can hear a little bit of the French national anthem. It is the last of the composer's 24 preludes.

After the fireworks die down, as low notes rumble, a small piece of La Marseillaise sounds softly, like music from far away. It feels as if a band somewhere is playing the anthem at the end of the festival night.

Writing a set of 24 preludes is a tradition that goes back to Bach's Well-Tempered Clavier and Chopin's 24 Preludes. Debussy wrote his in two books of 12, and placed this brilliant Fireworks at the very end. It is the grand finale of the whole series.

This piece uses glissandos, where the fingers or the back of the hand slide quickly across the keys. Dozens of notes sound in an instant, like a rocket shooting up. It looks spectacular too, so audiences sometimes gasp at concerts.

July 14 marks the storming of the Bastille prison in 1789, which helped start the French Revolution. In Japan, it is called 'Pari-sai,' the Paris festival. Fireworks light up the sky over Paris that night. Debussy was born just outside Paris and grew up in the city, so he knew that night's atmosphere well.
