小組曲より「小舟にて」

初演でドビュッシーと連弾したジャック・デュランは、楽譜出版社デュラン社の跡つぎでした。のちにデュラン社はドビュッシーの作品を数多く出版し、ドビュッシーにとって欠かせない仕事のパートナーになります。2人のつきあいは、1つのピアノの前から始まったのです。

Jacques Durand, who played the duet with Debussy at the premiere, was heir to the Durand music publishing firm. Later, Durand published a great many of Debussy's works and became his essential business partner. Their partnership began side by side at one piano.

ドビュッシーは少年のころ、モーテ夫人という女性からピアノを習いました。この人は詩人ヴェルレーヌの妻の母でした。モーテ夫人は、自分はショパンの弟子だったと語っていたと言われています。のちにヴェルレーヌの詩に何度も曲をつけるドビュッシーにとって、ふしぎな縁です。

As a boy, Debussy took piano lessons from Madame Mauté, who was the mother of Verlaine's wife. She is said to have claimed that she had studied with Chopin. It is a curious link, since Debussy later set Verlaine's poems to music many times.

オーケストラ版を作ったアンリ・ビュッセルは、1872年に生まれ、1973年に亡くなりました。なんと101歳まで長生きした作曲家・指揮者です。ドビュッシーのオペラ『ペレアスとメリザンド』の上演にもかかわった、ドビュッシーの身近な仲間の1人でした。

Henri Büsser, who made the orchestral version, was born in 1872 and died in 1973. He lived to the amazing age of 101. A composer and conductor, he was one of Debussy's close colleagues and was involved in performances of Debussy's opera Pelléas et Mélisande.

『小組曲』は、同じころに書かれたドビュッシーの実験的な作品にくらべて、とてもわかりやすくやさしい書き方です。そのため、家庭で楽しむ腕のいいアマチュアのために書かれたのでは、という説があります。今も連弾の発表会でよく選ばれる理由の1つです。

Compared with Debussy's more experimental works from the same years, the Petite Suite is very clear and simple. Some think it was written for skilled amateurs to enjoy at home. That is one reason it is still a popular choice at duet recitals.
