The Story

This waltz is No. 15 from Brahms's Sixteen Waltzes, Op. 39, written in 1865. All sixteen are short, and No. 15 is a graceful miniature. Its sweet, gentle melody made it the most famous of the set. Many piano students know it well.

It was first written for piano four hands, two players at one piano, and published in 1866. At that time Brahms lived in Vienna and enjoyed the atmosphere of the city of waltzes. Later he arranged the set for solo piano himself, making both a regular version and an easier one. No. 15 is in A-flat major in the regular solo version and in A major in the easier version.

The set was dedicated to Eduard Hanslick, a famous music critic in Vienna. Hanslick wrote, in effect, that the words "Brahms" and "waltzes" stared at each other in surprise on the elegant title page. Brahms was seen as such a serious composer that his waltzes came as a real surprise.

This is a short and sweet waltz. It has a soft, rocking melody. The composer was known for serious music. People were surprised that he wrote waltzes! Many piano students play this piece.

Hanslick, the critic who received the dedication, wrote that the words "Brahms" and "waltzes" seemed to stare at each other in amazement. At the time, Brahms was known for serious music, so a set of light dance pieces was a big surprise.

When Brahms arranged the waltzes for solo piano, he also made an easier version with thinner chords and simpler keys. No. 15 is in A-flat major in the regular version and in A major in the easier one. The solo versions are the ones most often played today.

Brahms greatly admired the music of Johann Strauss II, the "Waltz King." However, their close friendship grew later than 1865, when this set was written. Behind the set was the waltz culture that filled Vienna at the time.

Brahms deeply admired Schubert and even helped publish some of his music. The Sixteen Waltzes remind many listeners of the many short waltzes and Ländler, or country dances in three beats, that Schubert wrote. Each piece is short, and the mood keeps changing from one to the next.
