A German Requiem is a large work in seven movements for solo singers, chorus and orchestra, which Brahms wrote between 1865 and 1868. It lasts about 70 minutes. A traditional Requiem sets the Latin words of the Catholic Mass for the Dead to music. But for this piece, Brahms himself chose the words from the German Bible translated by Martin Luther.
最初の曲は「悲しんでいる人たちは幸いである。その人たちはなぐさめられるであろう」という言葉で始まります。死者の魂を救う祈りよりも、愛する人を失って悲しむ「残された人びと」をなぐさめることに重きがおかれているのです。1865年の母の死、そしてその前の恩人シューマンの死が、作曲の大きなきっかけになったと考えられています。The first movement begins with the words: 'Blessed are they that mourn, for they shall be comforted.' Rather than praying to save the souls of the dead, the work focuses on comforting the living, the people left behind after losing someone they love. The death of Brahms's mother in 1865, and earlier the death of his mentor Schumann, are thought to have been big reasons for writing it.
1867年にウィーンで最初の3曲が演奏されましたが、評判はいまひとつでした。1868年4月10日の聖金曜日、ブレーメン大聖堂でブラームス自身の指揮により6曲の形で演奏されて大成功。そのあとソプラノ独唱の第5曲が加えられ、1869年にライプツィヒで全7曲が初めて演奏されました。この成功で、ブラームスの名はヨーロッパ中に知られるようになりました。The first three movements were played in Vienna in 1867, but the response was mixed. On Good Friday, 10 April 1868, Brahms conducted a six-movement version in Bremen Cathedral, and it was a triumph. He then added a fifth movement with soprano solo, and all seven movements were first performed in Leipzig in 1869. This success made Brahms's name known all over Europe.
This is a big piece for a choir and an orchestra. It is a Requiem, but it is in German, not Latin. Brahms chose the words from the Bible himself. The music says, 'Happy are the people who are sad, because they will find comfort.' It wants to help people who have lost someone.

In a letter to a friend, Brahms wrote that he would gladly leave out the word 'German' and simply put 'human' instead. It shows that he wanted this music to be for all people, not for one nation.
1867年のウィーンでの演奏では、第3曲の最後、低い音がずっと鳴りつづける部分で、ティンパニが大きすぎてほかの音をかき消してしまったと伝えられています。そのせいもあって、客席からは拍手と同時に非難の声も上がりました。
At the 1867 performance in Vienna, the timpani player is said to have played far too loudly in the long held bass note at the end of the third movement, drowning out everything else. Partly because of this, the audience answered with boos as well as applause.
ソプラノ独唱が歌う第5曲は、ブレーメンでの演奏のあとに書き足されました。歌詞には「母がその子をなぐさめるように、わたしはあなたがたをなぐさめよう」という言葉があり、亡くなった母を思って加えたのではないかと言われています。
The fifth movement, sung by a solo soprano, was added after the Bremen performance. Its words include 'I will comfort you, as one whom his mother comforts.' Many believe Brahms added it thinking of his late mother.
聖書から言葉を選んでいるのに、この曲の歌詞には「イエス・キリスト」の名前が一度も出てきません。ブレーメン大聖堂の音楽監督はこれを気にして意見を伝えたと言われていますが、ブラームスは歌詞を変えませんでした。
Although the words come from the Bible, the name of Jesus Christ never appears in the text. The music director of Bremen Cathedral is said to have worried about this and told Brahms so, but Brahms did not change the words.
