Russian composer Alexander Borodin wrote this orchestral piece in 1880 and called it a 'musical picture.' It shows a caravan, guarded by Russian soldiers, crossing the endless steppes of Central Asia and slowly disappearing into the distance. Close your eyes, and you can almost hear the dry wind and the slow steps of camels and horses.
The piece was written for a planned series of tableaux, or living pictures, celebrating the 25th year of Tsar Alexander II's reign, but the show was never staged. It has two melodies: a Russian song and an Eastern-style tune played by the English horn. At first they appear separately, but later the two are played at the same time and blend beautifully.
It was first performed in St. Petersburg in 1880, conducted by Rimsky-Korsakov. Borodin dedicated it to the great Hungarian composer Franz Liszt, who is said to have liked it. Though short, it remains one of the best-loved pieces of Russian music.
This music is a picture of a big, wide land. A long line of people and camels travels slowly. You can hear a Russian song and an Eastern song. Later, the two songs play together. At the end, they fade away. The composer was also a scientist.

Borodin's main job was chemistry. He was a professor busy with research and teaching. He reportedly called himself a 'Sunday composer' because he wrote music in his free time. His name is still known in chemistry, too.
Later in the piece, the Russian song and the Eastern song are played together. Borodin wrote them so that the two different melodies fit perfectly. In the composer's own description, the song of the Russian soldiers and the song of the Central Asian caravan blend in harmony.
At the very start, the violins hold one very high note for a long time. It suggests the wide sky and the far horizon of the steppe. The high note returns at the end as the caravan fades away.
Borodin was one of 'The Five,' a group of composers who wanted to create truly Russian music. Mussorgsky and Rimsky-Korsakov were also members. Most of the five had other jobs, such as army officer or chemist.
