Je crois entendre encore" ("I think I still hear") is an aria sung by the young tenor Nadir in Act 1 of Bizet's opera "The Pearl Fishers." He remembers the voice of Leïla, the woman who once stole his heart, and sings as if in a dream that he can still hear it. Its high notes must be sung very softly, and tenors dream of singing it well.
The story takes place long ago on the island of Ceylon, now Sri Lanka. In a village of pearl fishers, two best friends, Nadir and Zurga, both fall in love with the same woman, Leïla. Also in Act 1, the two men sing a duet promising to stay friends, "Au fond du temple saint." It is world-famous as "The Pearl Fishers' Duet."
It was first performed on 30 September 1863 at the Théâtre Lyrique in Paris. It closed after 18 performances and was not staged in Paris again while Bizet was alive. Still, the composer Berlioz praised it in a newspaper, writing that the score did Bizet "the greatest honour." After Bizet's death the opera spread around the world, and this aria became a favorite of great tenors.
This is a song from an opera. A young man sings about a woman he loved. He can still hear her voice. The song is soft and dreamy. Bizet was only 24 when the opera was first performed.

When "The Pearl Fishers" opened, Bizet was only 24. The work was born when Carvalho, the director of the Théâtre Lyrique, asked the young composer to write it. It was not a big hit like "Carmen" later, but today it is staged around the world as the best-known opera of Bizet's youth.
When it opened, critics were divided, but the great composer Berlioz praised the originality and delicacy of the work in a newspaper article. Coming from Berlioz, who was known as a strict critic, these words meant a lot for the young Bizet.
Bizet's own handwritten score was lost, and the versions published after his death had changes by other people, including the duet and the ending. In the late 20th century, scholars worked to bring back the original, and today the opera is often performed in a form closer to Bizet's own.
The great tenor Enrico Caruso recorded this aria in 1904. In the early days of records, recordings by star singers helped the song become known even to people who never went to the opera house.
