The Story

Carillon" is the last piece in Bizet's "L'Arlésienne Suite No. 1." A carillon is a set of many bells in a church tower. In this piece, the horns repeat the same three notes again and again, like ringing bells, while the orchestra plays a bright, strong melody above them.

L'Arlésienne" is music Bizet wrote for a play by the writer Alphonse Daudet. Set in Provence in southern France, it tells the sad story of Frédéri, a young man who falls in love with a woman from the town of Arles. The theater had little money, so the orchestra had only 26 players. "Carillon" was made from music played during the play.

The play opened in Paris in the autumn of 1872, but it failed and closed after 19 performances. Bizet, however, chose four pieces from the music and rewrote them for a full-size orchestra to make Suite No. 1. When it was played that November, it was a big success. After his death, Suite No. 2 was also made, and today the suites are far more famous than the play.

"Carillon" means many bells. In this music, horns sound like bells: ding, dong, ding! The music is bright and strong. It comes from a play about a young man in France. The woman he loves never comes on the stage!「カリヨン」は、たくさんの鐘という意味です。

The "woman of Arles" in the title is only talked about and never appears on stage. Because of this, in French, a person or thing that is often talked about but never shows up is sometimes called an "Arlésienne."

The 1872 production of the play closed after 19 performances, and even Daudet called it a flop. But that November, when Bizet's Suite No. 1 was played at a concert, it was cheered loudly, and the Minuet had to be played again as an encore.

From the very beginning, the horns repeat the same three notes, creating the sound of church bells ringing on and on. Bizet's clever idea was to make the sound of bells with only orchestral instruments, without real bells.

Suite No. 2, which includes the famous "Farandole," was published in 1879, four years after Bizet's death. It is believed that his friend Guiraud arranged it, though his name does not appear on the score. Through the two suites, the play's music lives on today.
