Beethoven wrote his Violin Concerto in D major in 1806. It is the only violin concerto he completed. It begins with four soft beats on the timpani, and then calm, noble music spreads out. It lasts about 45 minutes and is often counted among the greatest violin concertos, together with those by Mendelssohn and Brahms.
Beethoven wrote it for Franz Clement, a popular violinist in Vienna. But the music was finished very late, and it is said that Clement had almost no time to practice before the premiere. At the same concert, Clement is also said to have played a piece of his own with his violin held upside down, like a circus trick.
The premiere on December 23, 1806, received both praise and criticism, and for nearly 40 years the concerto was played only now and then. It was made famous by a 12-year-old genius, Joseph Joachim. In 1844 he played it brilliantly in London, with Mendelssohn conducting, and this helped it become accepted as a masterpiece.
This is Beethoven's only finished violin concerto. It starts with four soft drum beats. Some people liked it at first, but it was not played often. Many years later, a 12-year-old boy played it in London. His concert helped make it famous.

The boy whose 1844 London performance made this little-played concerto famous was Joseph Joachim, only 12 years old. He later became a great violinist and also gave the premiere of Brahms's Violin Concerto.
It is said that at the premiere concert, the soloist Clement played a piece of his own on just one string, holding his violin upside down. Concerts in those days could include showy tricks like this.
At the request of the publisher Muzio Clementi, Beethoven also arranged this concerto for piano. In the cadenza he wrote for the piano version, the timpani play together with the piano, which is very unusual.
Beethoven did not leave a cadenza, the soloist's showpiece, for the violin version. So today violinists often play cadenzas written later by great players such as Joachim and Kreisler.
