The Story

Symphony No. 2 in D major is the second symphony Beethoven wrote, in 1801 and 1802. It opens with a grand, slow introduction, followed by bright music full of energy. It is much bigger and stronger than the First Symphony, and it shows Beethoven taking a big step toward his own style.

At this time, Beethoven was suffering deeply as he slowly lost his hearing. In autumn 1802, in Heiligenstadt near Vienna, he wrote a letter to his brothers describing his despair and his decision to keep living for his art. It is known as the Heiligenstadt Testament. Yet this symphony, finished around the same time, is full of brightness and humor.

The premiere took place on April 5, 1803, at the Theater an der Wien in Vienna, together with his Third Piano Concerto and other works. The symphony was dedicated to Prince Karl Lichnowsky. One newspaper critic compared the symphony to a wounded dragon writhing and refusing to die. To people then, the music sounded that wild and new.

This is Beethoven's second symphony. When he wrote it, he was losing his hearing. He felt very sad. But the music is bright and full of energy! One critic said the symphony was like a hurt dragon.

In October 1802, in Heiligenstadt, Beethoven wrote his 'testament' about his despair over his hearing. But this symphony, finished around the same time, is bright and lively. Perhaps he did not pour his pain into the music, but used music to rise above it.

In 1804, a critic for the newspaper Zeitung für die elegante Welt described this symphony as a crude monster, like a wounded dragon that writhes and refuses to die. Today it is loved as a cheerful piece, but to ears of that time it was very shocking.

The third movement is the first in Beethoven's symphonies to be called a Scherzo. Scherzo means 'joke' in Italian. Loud and soft sounds jump from one instrument to another, and the fun makes you want to laugh.

The finale starts with a short sound like a hiccup. Some people compare this funny opening to a hiccup or even a burp. It shows that Beethoven's playful side was still alive, even in his time of despair.
