Symphony No. 1 in C major is the first symphony Beethoven wrote. He composed it in 1799 and 1800, and it is bright and full of energy. It follows the style of Haydn and Mozart, but it is packed with new ideas that make listeners say, 'Wait, what?' It is the work with which Beethoven announced himself as a composer of symphonies.
The biggest surprise is the opening. Although the symphony is in C major, the first chord is not in C major. It is an unstable chord that leans toward another key. The third movement is called a minuet, but it is very fast and closer to a later type of movement called a scherzo, which means 'joke'. The finale begins with a humorous scale that grows one note at a time.
The premiere took place on April 2, 1800, at the Burgtheater in Vienna, at the first big concert Beethoven held for his own benefit. His Septet was also performed that day. The symphony was dedicated to Baron Gottfried van Swieten, an important supporter of music. This was the start of the story of nine symphonies that led to the 'Eroica', the Fifth, and the Ninth.
This is Beethoven's first symphony. It is bright and happy. But the first sound is a surprise! It does not sound like 'home'. The last part starts with a funny little scale.

Symphonies of that time usually began firmly with a chord in their home key. But this one begins softly with a chord that leads away from C major. It sounds gentle to us today, but to listeners then, it was a bold opening that made them wonder where the music was going.
The third movement is labeled a minuet, but it is very fast and nothing like a slow court dance. From his Second Symphony on, Beethoven began clearly calling such fast movements scherzos.
The finale begins slowly, and the violins play a scale that grows by one note each time: three notes, four, five... When the scale finally reaches the top, the fast music suddenly takes off. It shows Beethoven's playful side as he teases the audience.
The concert on April 2, 1800, was organized by Beethoven to present his own works. He was twenty-nine. He placed his new pieces alongside music by Mozart and Haydn. The concert was an important chance for Beethoven to present his music to Vienna.
