The Story

Piano Sonata No. 15 in D major was written by Beethoven in 1801. It is known as the 'Pastoral' Sonata, but Beethoven did not choose this name. The nickname is said to have been first used by the London publisher Broderip & Wilkinson. It has four movements and a calm, peaceful mood that brings the countryside to mind.

The first movement begins with the bass repeating the note D again and again. It reminds us of the drone of a bagpipe, a country instrument that holds one low note. The second movement is a slightly lonely walking piece in D minor. The third is a short, playful scherzo, and the fourth is a rondo that sings over a gently rocking bass.

When he wrote this piece, Beethoven had begun to notice his hearing problems and was deeply worried. In 1802 he wrote the 'Heiligenstadt Testament', a letter showing his painful feelings. Even so, this sonata is full of a calm love of nature. It was published in 1802 and dedicated to the Viennese scholar Joseph von Sonnenfels.

This is a calm piano sonata by Beethoven. People call it 'Pastoral'. 'Pastoral' means 'of the countryside'. The low notes sound like a bagpipe. But Beethoven did not give it this name!

The name 'Pastoral' is said to have been first used by the London publisher Broderip & Wilkinson, and it later spread through an edition by the Hamburg publisher Cranz. Beethoven himself named his later Symphony No. 6 'Pastoral', but not this sonata. Be careful not to mix up the two 'Pastorals'.

According to his pupil Carl Czerny, Beethoven loved the second movement, the Andante, for a long time and often played it for himself. The short, separated notes in the left hand sound like slow footsteps.

In 1801, the same year as this sonata, Beethoven also finished Piano Sonata No. 14, known as the 'Moonlight'. The quiet, sad 'Moonlight' and the peaceful 'Pastoral' show two completely different worlds written at the same time.

In the first and last movements, the bass holds or repeats the same notes for a long time. This sounds like a bagpipe or other country instruments, so many people feel the name 'Pastoral' fits well. The name came later, but perhaps the music itself suggested it.
