Piano Sonata No. 26, 'Les Adieux', was written by Beethoven in 1809 and 1810. Its three movements are titled 'The Farewell', 'The Absence' and 'The Return'. Like a story, they describe parting from a dear friend, the lonely days that follow, and the joy of meeting again. It is a rare sonata whose titles were given by Beethoven himself.
In May 1809, Napoleon's French army was approaching Vienna, and Archduke Rudolph, Beethoven's pupil and patron, left the city with the imperial family. Beethoven wrote the date of his departure, May 4, 1809, on the score. Above the first three chords he wrote the syllables 'Le-be-wohl', meaning 'farewell', and the music sounds like a distant horn call.
On January 30, 1810, Archduke Rudolph returned to Vienna, and the last movement, 'The Return', bursts with joy. The sonata was dedicated to him and published in 1811. When the publisher gave it the French title 'Les Adieux', Beethoven complained that 'Lebewohl' is said warmly to one person, while 'Les Adieux' is said to a whole crowd.
This piano sonata tells a story. A good friend of Beethoven leaves the city. Beethoven is sad and lonely. Then the friend comes back! The music says goodbye, misses him, and then jumps for joy.

Above the first three chords, Beethoven wrote 'Le-be-wohl', one syllable per note. It is German for 'farewell'. The three notes sound like a post horn, and they seem to wave goodbye to someone who is leaving.
When the publisher used the French title 'Les Adieux', Beethoven complained in a letter. He explained that 'Lebewohl' is said warmly to one person, while 'Les Adieux' is something you might say to a whole crowd or an entire town.
This sonata's opus number is 81a. There is also an Op. 81b, a sextet for two horns and strings. The two works ended up sharing the same number when they were published, so 'a' and 'b' are used to tell them apart.
Archduke Rudolph was the emperor's younger brother and Beethoven's pupil in piano and composition. He was also one of the supporters who promised Beethoven a yearly income. Many masterpieces, including the 'Archduke' Trio and the 'Emperor' Concerto, were dedicated to him.
