The 'Kreutzer' Sonata is Beethoven's Violin Sonata No. 9, for violin and piano. He finished it in 1803, and the title page says in Italian that it is 'written in a very concertante style, almost like a concerto'. True to those words, it is a large-scale work in which the two instruments clash fiercely as equals.
The first person to play this piece was not Kreutzer but the violinist George Bridgetower. Beethoven wrote it in a great hurry for the premiere in May 1803, and it is said that Bridgetower played from music that had only just been finished. For the last movement, Beethoven used music he had originally written for another violin sonata, Op. 30 No. 1.
Later, however, the two men fell out, and Beethoven changed the dedication to the famous French violinist Rodolphe Kreutzer. The sonata was published in 1805, and his name became its nickname. Later, the Russian writer Leo Tolstoy wrote a story with the same title, The Kreutzer Sonata, and the Czech composer Janáček wrote a string quartet inspired by that story.
This is a sonata for violin and piano. The two instruments sound powerful, like a battle. The sonata is named after a violinist, Kreutzer. People say Kreutzer never played it. Another violinist played it first.
It is said that Kreutzer never performed the sonata dedicated to him. According to the composer Hector Berlioz, Kreutzer found it impossible to understand. It is ironic that his name lives on in one of the most famous violin sonatas in the world.
According to what Bridgetower told a friend many years later, at the premiere he played one passage of the first movement in his own improvised way. Beethoven jumped up, hugged him, and said, 'Once more, my dear fellow!' The two were once very good friends.
It is said that they quarreled because Bridgetower made a rude remark about a woman Beethoven knew. But the details are not clear. If they had not fallen out, we might be calling it the 'Bridgetower' Sonata today.
In 1889, Tolstoy wrote The Kreutzer Sonata, a story about a man driven mad by jealousy after hearing this sonata performed. Moved by the story, Janáček wrote his String Quartet No. 1, 'Kreutzer Sonata', in 1923. One sonata led to a novel, and then to new music.
