The 'Archduke' Trio is a piano trio for piano, violin and cello. Beethoven wrote it in 1811 and dedicated it to Archduke Rudolph of Austria, who was his pupil and an important supporter. The nickname 'Archduke' comes from this dedication. It is a grand, noble work in four movements.
Archduke Rudolph was the emperor's younger brother, and he studied piano and composition with Beethoven. In 1809, together with other nobles, he promised to pay Beethoven money every year so that he would stay in Vienna. The first movement opens with a broad, dignified theme. The third is a beautiful, prayer-like theme with variations, and the fourth is a bright, cheerful rondo.
The premiere took place in Vienna in April 1814, with Beethoven at the piano. But by then his hearing was very poor, and this became one of his last public performances as a pianist. The trio was published in 1816, and today it is considered one of the greatest piano trios ever written.
This piece is for three players: piano, violin and cello. Beethoven wrote it for his student, Archduke Rudolph. He was a prince. Beethoven played the piano at the first concert. But he could not hear well, so it was hard for him.

The composer and violinist Louis Spohr watched a rehearsal of this trio. He wrote that because of his deafness, Beethoven played much too loudly or too softly, and little was left of his former skill. It was a sad last glimpse of a great pianist.
In Haruki Murakami's novel Kafka on the Shore (2002), a character named Hoshino hears this trio in a coffee shop and is deeply moved. The recording he hears is by Rubinstein, Heifetz and Feuermann, a group known as the 'Million Dollar Trio'.
Besides this trio, Archduke Rudolph received the dedications of many masterpieces, including Piano Concertos No. 4 and No. 5, the 'Emperor', the 'Les Adieux' Sonata and the great Missa solemnis. He is said to be the person to whom Beethoven dedicated the most works.
The third movement is a solemn, hymn-like theme with variations. After the last variation, the music does not stop but leads straight into the cheerful rondo of the fourth movement. The sudden change from deep prayer to everyday fun is part of its charm.
